What happens in a sleep clinic?

I want to do a study, because I have had mild narcolepsy symptoms for about 10 years and sleep paralysis symptoms for 7. Sleep disorders run in my family :( what happens at the sleep clinic and how long do you stay? I don't always have episodes. This week I have narcolepsy episode 3 days in a row, and I haven't had sleep paralysis in a few months now. Will I still produce abnormal brain waves during rem sleep? Or will I have to have an episode while I'm there in order for them to diagnose me. I know I have a problem and would like to be allowed to get a medication to help.
