What do you call a written soap opera?

"Drama" isn't usually used to describe books, just to describe movies. From the sounds of it, I would call your story a contemporary _______ (i.e. contemporary YA, contemporary romance, etc). You could also describe it as melodramatic, perhaps - though that's not a genre either.
