7mm or .30-06? both for elk and smaller?
Obviously either would work so I would look a little more at the majority of the hunting you'll be doing. I have always considered the 7mm Rem Mag to be an equal to the .300 Win Mag for the most part, both of which are great elk rifles but a little big for deer but not out of the ballpark. The .30-06 is toward the lower end of elk calibers but still works just fine but would be better for deer and smaller. The 7mm does have a little better ballistics and shoots flatter. Within what would be a safe range for taking a shot and making a clean kill it won't make a huge difference though. If you are planning on doing more elk hunting than anything get the 7mm, if not I would stick with the .30-06.
